Tension in Bayelsa as Court of Appeal agrees to hear Sylva Case....Reserves Judgement

Court of Appeal has struck out the preliminary objection filed by the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, against the appeal by the All‎ Progressives Congress, APC, and its candidate, Timipre Sylva, challenging the judgement of the state election tribunal which upheld the election of Governor Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa State, reports Pilot.The appellate court further refused the application by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to amend its brief by adding some words which it claimed were mitted.The Court of Appeal is sitting on the multiple appeals arising from the judgement of the Bayelsa State governorship election tribunal.Meanwhile, the Appeal Court has reserved judgements in the three appeals after taking submissions from counsels to parties to the appeals.Arguing the main appeal, lead counsel to the appellants, Mr Sabastine Hon (SAN) submitted that the tribunal was in great error when it dismissed the petition.He further submitted that the governorship tribunal ‎misinterpreted section 26 (1) of the Electoral Act, 2011, which he said talked of postponement and not cancellation of an election.He argued that the cancellation of the December 6, 2015, governorship election in Southern Ijaw mades any other decision taken by INEC null and void.
The councel added that contrary to the position of the respondents that the appellants waived their rights by participating in the January 9, 2016, re-scheduled election, the appellants indeed tendered a protest letter against the cancellation and that there was no opportunity to go to court.He therefore urged the court to grant the reliefs sought by his clients, including the alternative reliefs.

Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State has declared as false the allegation by Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State that he (Wike) spent N2 billion to mobilise militants for the postponed governorship election in the state.Oshiomhole was reported to have recently said that Wike sent the amount to the Edo State governorship candidate of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Pastor Osagie Ize-Nyamu, as part of an arrangement with Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State to mobilise militants ahead the election.Denying the allegation however, Wike, in a statement issued in Port Harcourt, on Wednesday, by his media aide, Simeon Nwakaudu, said Oshiomhole had only confirmed his penchant for lies and inconsistencies.He said the Edo State governor only made the allegation out of panic over the rejection of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state, adding it was completely untrue that he and Senator Okowa mobilised militants to the state.“Oshiomhole even cornered me and said ‘don’t mind these people, they don’t know that we meet and talk. If Oshiomhole has lost the confidence of his people, he should not blame me. If Oshiomhole has lost the confidence of his people, he should not blame me.“He brought the president and 10 APC governors and he was not satisfied. Only because two PDP governors visited Edo State, Oshiomole is panicking.”This was the same man who praised former President Goodluck Jonathan for promoting free and fair election, one man, one vote which saw Oshiomhole win a second term.Anywhere Oshiomhole goes, he insults the former president. The Federal Government has inaugurated the Central Ogbia Regional Water Supply Project in Bayelsa.The Minister of Water Resources, Mr Suleiman Adamu, who inaugurated the project, said 13 communities, including Otuoke, would benefit from it. According to him, the Federal Government is committed to completing all abandoned water projects to improve livelihood.Adamu said adequate water supply for human and livestock production was a crucial aspect of social and economic development.He said the recently launched roadmap on water resources underscored the need for short and long term strategies for effective and efficient delivery of water to the people.“The project we are inaugurating today is among the high priority projects for water supply.“This project commissioning, therefore, further demonstrates that the Buhari administration is committed to completing all viable projects that have positive impact on the lives of our people without any political sentiments,” the minister said.He called on the host communities to take ownership of the water project by maintaining it for improvement of livelihood and reducing water borne diseases.

N303M Housing & Car Loans record 1,131 Civil-Servants as Beneficiaries in Ekiti

A total of 1, 131 Civil servants in Ekiti have reportedly benefitted from the Gov Fayose led government’s N303 million housing and car loans in the last 20 months.Chairman, Ekiti State House of Assembly Committee on Government House and Protocol, Dayo Akinyele made this known on Wednesday in Ado-Ekiti.The committee chairman commended the present government for its workers’ welfare policy, while submitting his report at Wednesday’s plenary presided over by the Speaker, Kola Oluwawole.Akinleye said the present government had disbursed over N303 million as car and housing loans since its inception on Oct. 16, 2014. “As a demonstration of his worker-friendly administration, Governor Ayo Fayose has disbursed the sum of N200 million as car loan to 667 beneficiaries.“Also, N102 million have so far been given as housing loan to 464 civil servants in the state.“During my committee’s oversight function, we observed that arrangement was ongoing with the Federal Mortgage Bank to expand workers access to loan.”
